There is something missing on this design, so I’m thinking i should have some other type of visual that breaks up the collage and ads another style, or “designer” feel to it. I call it “DESIGNED DESIGNER” (pretty spiffy eh??)…….. pfffff…. not really, “don’t listen to him, he’s crazy”… what? what did you say?…

……Never mind.

Outside Box design:

The design strips is what the box will look like with holes cut into the box, as i intend to make it a design feature, showing part of what’s inside.

Although i was trying to have both the rough and refined together, i felt that the design was repeating the whole “draft” thing a little too much. So i decided to combine the two into the same layout, “to try and make it more upbeat” also leaving room for other simple design.

Development stage 2

September 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Adding to the idea of something being crafted, i wanted to have something where it was physically put together, not only showing the contrast of work that is moving towards being finished to final product, but showing the rough, raw edge development and idea process.

I have attempted this by creating a hand done collage that consists of all the same elements as the more refined computer drawn (over grey led drawings), that follows in a story line type progression of my use of technology and objects.

Progressed idea

September 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Working on the theme of “draft plan” i wanted to base my idea of the visual metaphor of something physically being built or designed, which i thought would be a good chance to so some more hand done artwork in the content.

I also wanted to get across the idea of how using all these past technologies have shaped my path of view of technology and how to use – in terms of my creative output. The idea is that the draft is a kind of “pre-designed draft” for myself as if someone else had to design me.

These are the first designs iv worked on toward the objective: Draft line artwork of all the different forms of technology iv engaged with.

Content / layout ideas

August 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This is the first idea i have for what the content of the book will include:

Being that my concept for the box at this stage is based around my personal and general user experience of objects and technology, i have a feeling that i could further that concept by almost making in like a complete guide, with use of instructions, descriptions, statistics and notes of user experience. But i also wish to put a personal touch into it by describing how the object or technology aided to my knowledge and ability which will continue throughout the document.

To Further this, there will be features on each page to help with the entire user experience of the document and understanding of each specified objects role:

http://cre8shaun.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/layout1_text_big.jpg

1: Object title and descriptions

2: Statistics (i think from my personal experience of using them)

3: Extensions of how the object had effected me

4: Human model: pointing out how i used it, and what i got out of them

5: A timeline to continue throughout the document, keeping track of the entire history.

Project 1 – credo

Shaun Bryndzia and interaction.

Introduction:

Technology has always been something that has intrigued me, being born in an age that is much more technologically advanced then when my parents were born. Continuously exploring what things I could find around the house, from Video players, walkmans, mobile phones, old type writers, hand held voice recorders to toys, video games, musical instruments, musical recording devices etc. Computers had always amazed me, starting from the class room of primary school that was my first experience of it. Educational games would normally be played on them, such as the magic school bus. Now that I think about it, pretty much all of things that I have grown up with involve interaction and entertainment.

Why this is important to new future technologies

Interaction with objects and the environment seems to be a crucial part of learning with a lot of us, which makes interaction a very important part of our lives.
As I have found more and more through my years of education in design, interaction and entertainment I think has a strong role embedded into design to make people wish to use things and interact with things. For the way of the future, designers point the directions for which people follow using the power of interaction and entertainment to direct important messages to the public in inviting ways.

Being a designer, it should be a standing point, using interaction and entertainment to create a dynamic with end-users. From the basic almost primitive hands on interaction, to the Technologically advanced using high tech computer software, either way, the transferral of information from something to the person using it will be able to draw something from it.

Focus:

My focus for the project may include all the things that I have grown up with to what I use now, telling the historical story of how interaction between people and objects has evolved, and it’s importance. The content will hopefully explore my contribution to the exploration of interactivity and entertainment.

Target:

Designers, Artists, Employers, Musicians, and others who may not know what design is.

I will try to explain what I think my role as a designer to future employers, and others that may not realise how these interactions impact on our daily lives. This may not just include the physical things that we touch, but should include all elements of which we interact with such as voice, sounds, music (being a musician myself i would like to try and put some of this into the design and feeling of the document).

Field Research

Research Method 3

Semantic Differential Analysis

Description:

Research which involves obtaining direct insight from participants of the environment. My research group took a group of people out into the city, to observe the visual language that they had come across, whilst responding to the form that we had provided. This form of research was a little bit like a focus group, except instead of keeping people within a closed space, we took them out to experience something.

The way that a Semantic Differential Analysis works is that there a set of questions that form into three groups: Evaluative, Potency, and Activity, creating ideas and concepts to measure. These questions have two ends: for instance: bad, good or Nice, horrible.

With people filling out these forms, it is helping us to obtain their real emotional responses to what they see.

Example of form we used

Conclusion:

This method of research has been very beneficial for us, being able to take people out into the real environment in which we are studying, and getting peoples direct emotional feedback. Being much like a focus group, except it isn’t inclosed in a laboratory environment, it’s out in the field, which we felt was much more appropriate for the research.

When we went out to each point, each place all had their main aspects of attention that would continue throughout the group, which gave us ideas that there were specific visual mediums within the public there were more effective then others.

Summery:

unique and simple (straight to the point), were aspects for attention in public

unusual types of visual language captures attention.

The positioning of the medium is also a huge factor when trying to get the attention of the general public.

Somewhere that people have time to briefly look around or a position that people can’t avoid to look at is an effective position to put visual language.

• We found a lot of visual language, which moved around or wasn’t stationary was very successful in getting people to look at it.

Creating curiosity and a sense of mystery is another area, which we found was an important aspect to get people interested and involved.

• This may also mean, if something isn’t completely understood people will try and investigate further.

• Emotion and memory could also be another possibility: If something is seen that relates to other good memories, such as the Mario sign in the city.

Curtain project

Experiment 6

Curtain project

Description:

Going by one of the three points of attraction: Unusual happens to be one of them for attracting attention. Our idea of something unusual would be to place a strange object in a place that may not have these sorts of visuals in the chosen environment, which happens to be in the city. This strange object is a bright orange curtain, which may contain messages behind it, to either get direct attention, or even intrigue people to look behind it.

Aim:

As some of our past experiment have involved slight twists of usual visual language “piano warning sign”, we wanted to try and see if we could make something a bit strange that may get peoples attention, attempt to distract them from the heavy artillery of public media.

Curtain Placement 1:

City: Bouke street and russle street,

Location: On a construction fence, aside of the walkway

Curtain Placement 2:

City: Southbank

Location: On a wooden fence, not near any other visual distractions, next the river.

Method:

We recorded the information into three categories, separated into three,

5 minutes segments

Seen but kept waking past – male/female

Stopped to look – male/female

Not looked – male/female

Result:

City Placement

• The placement of the curtain in the central part of the city did not get much attention.

• People generally either walk straight past it,

• See it and ignore it,

• Glance and point and it.

• 70% of people don’t seem to even acknowledge it.

Riverside placement

• More then half the people walking past it has looked in the direction

• More females seemed to have looked at it

• A small amount of people, (mainly couples) had actually stopped to look and see if there was anything behind the curtain. (in first placement, we didn’t put anything behind it.)

Conclusion

Results were similar to the sign project, where the placement of the object in the busy parts of the city, were mainly ignored. Changing the placement to a place with less visual clutter seems to gain more attention.

This time with an added element of intrigue by placing something behind the curtain, more people had also seemed to have looked then before. People actually had some level of wanting to be involved with the object, which is a good sign for our research.

lecture: What is a community?

May 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Community is a group of people gathering around a focus, idea, game, religion, growing food.

Communities are those that share their experiences together, that live on common ground, share the same problems, and will do things together to create solutions.

The communities we create now will only become beneficial for us in the future, as the more people you have focused on similar ideas, the better the living situations will be within these communities.

As we are moving ever closer to global warming, things will change dramatically for us. We will need to create better systems of growing food, saving water, trading, saving the energy we have. The ideas of permaculture could very well help us move in this direction of sustainability. Permaculture is a design system which creates better ways to  manage our bad consumer systems, and make them into things which work under more natural systems.

We have the potential to turn rubbish tips, into areas where food could be grown. Just think of any place which is currently not being using for anything positive, like an area that slopes down, for when it may rain, all the water would fall into the bottom ends of the slope to trap the water; a perfect place to grow food.

Like i had mentioned in the my previous lecture notes on cuba; perhaps the only way for us to be self sustainable, is to have everything taken from us, and to start from scratch.

1-Natures food growth patterns go by its seasons, where certain foods will grow naturally. But due to our consuming habits, we force nature to grow things all year round, which doesn’t do any good for the food or the environment.

2-We have the potential to turn anyplace, that is currently somewhat wasteful, into a place that could provide food or other resources.

3-If we changed the way we consume, and learned to consumer allot less, countries wouldn’t need to build massive unsustainable power stations in order to provide the things we need to live.

Lecture: Theory and Explanation

May 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This lecture by Keith Robertson is about the construction of theory and philosophy, and how these can evaluate and distinguish the past and present.

“Theory= a set of facts, propositions, or principles analysed in their relation to one another and used used in science to explain ideas and concepts”

Theory is driven by Philosophy, where theory isn’t necessarily the truth, it is an argument, thats tries to take up multiple angles on things to explain situations.

Micheal Foucault – a french theorist who studies many areas, one was “Madness and Civilization”

Some sketches bellow describe some of his ideas, and focuses.

1-Insanity in old times was looked upon as something unique, and people seemed to look at it as a good phenomenon, now insanity is something thats stigmatised.

2- Although society’s ideas were that punishing people would return them to “the norm”, Foucault’s ideas of discipline and punish were that due to the general thinking of these people, they would generally not change.

3-Out of any place in the world, America has the most people in prison.
