Hello, My name is Shaun Bryndzia (cre8shaun) and welcome to my weblog. As this is my first blog, i should describe what the purpose of it all is. As i am studying designer doing honours, this blog will be keeping track of all the continue research that i will undertake with the subjects of Design Research Analysis, Methods and Studio.

Currently the research i am undertaking is Language, and its effects on Social Patterns. Topics my group had found interesting were based around: Onomatopoeia, which is the imitation of sounds in word form aiming to capture the same meaning during description. I was found that it is possibly a theory as to how human language evolved. The other idea we had were Body Language and investigating the general ideas of the Origin of Language.

Some very interesting things, but also, very large in scope. We aim as a group to try and capture this information in a visual way, but how will all this be helping to solve problems with current social patterns? its something thats currently in progress, so i look forward to inform you all of these findings.

Japanese Onomatopoeia

I found that within the context of Onomatopoeia, other languages will use it as almost another part of there normal language. In English, it seems to be mainly used and spoken as “sound words” where as in other cultures, its used to portray feelings an emotions, as well as describe unsounded events. For Instance, in Japanese Onomatopoeia come in an array of forms, two of which that is called “Giongo, and Gitaigo”, meaning sound – imitative words and descriptions of non – audible states and actions.

Information on Language

March 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As i had said before, the topic of discussion that affects social patterns that i am looking at is Language. Onomatopoeia was something that i was looking at which is the imitation of sounds, such as “BANG, WHOOSH, SLITHER” etc

I found this topic interesting as this kind of language is used in almost every language. An idea was that humans developed there language from imitating the sounds around them in their environment, as well as the animals that they would encounter.

There are some flaws to this theory though as “if humans gave names to things by their sounds, what about the objects that made no sounds?”. But generally, this verbally descriptive and visual way to record the sound of the word itself, i think is a universal means of communication.

Things i did look at though was that, for instance, when a the onomatopoeic word “Bow-wow” gets translated into other languages, many different sounds. Such as :Wau-wau = GermanOuaf ouaf = FrenchVoff voff = IcelandGuk guk = IndonesianGuau Guau = Spanish  My might not understand them now, but perhaps with a verbal demonstration, we would get the gist of the sound and what it would belong to.
